This week on What Did You Watch the wonderful Chantelle from Mama Mummy Mum over to you…
Hi there, *waves*. I’m Chantelle popping over from MamaMummyMum and I am thrilled to be joining in with the What Did You Watch? series here on Hex Mum’s blog. TV played a big part in my childhood and if I’m honest it still does now. So many memories tied to different programmes, where I was when watching a certain series, who I watched them with. It is surprising just what emotions certain shows can drum up, picking my five favourite TV programmes from when I was growing up was tough as there are so many I’d like to choose including anything on Nickolodeon, Fresh Prince of Belle Air, Boy Meets World, Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and Trap Door but those aren’t the ones I finally chose, so here goes…
This was Saturday night tele at its best. It was one of those shows that I remember watching together as a family. If you’ve never seen it, the idea was that contestants got pitted against Gladiators in order to score points each round and finally make it to the Eliminator, sounds exciting right! Jet was the one I aspired to be, if only I was as strong and bloody flexible!
2. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
This is a classic programme and in reality it wasn’t even me that started watching it, it was my little brother. It was nice that we had something in common. I was always the pink power ranger, come to think of it I don’t know any girls who wanted to be the yellow power ranger. The film spinoff is also a classic in its own right in my opinion. The show is still going now but times have changed with it being all about Dino charge Power Rangers now.
3. Byker Grove
Set in a youth club in Newcastle, this is the show that bought us Ant and Dec but of course at the time they were known to us as PJ and Duncan. It is a programme that I remember watching as pre teen. It managed to tackle many topics that at the time were rather controversial like teen pregnancy, homelessness and drug addictions. For me it was addictive viewing and introduced me to issues in life that I hadn’t necessarily heard of before or perhaps not fully understood.
4. Live & Kicking and SM:TV
Ok I know I’m cheating choosing two here but I just couldn’t decide. This was Saturday morning TV at its best, featuring lots of games, celebrity guests and other fab cartoons and programmes such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Rugrats and Sponge Bob Square Pants. This was when kids entertainment did just that, it entertained, managing to appeal to a wide a range of viewers! I watched these with friends at sleepovers, even slobbed out in my bed hungover sort of paying attention to them. I don’t think anything compares these days.
5. Dawson’s Creek
If I’m remembering rightly this was one of the first TV series that I really got into as a teenager, one where I couldn’t bare to miss an episode and I found myself getting really emotional over the story lines and characters leaving, dying etc. I had an almighty crush on Joshua Jackson and always believed that Pacey should end up with Joey, I mean I know the show was named after Dawson but he just didn’t have the same appeal. I miss these sorts of programmes, reality TV seems to have taken over these days.
There’s my choices, so many more that I’d like to mention but I think it would end up being a top 50 instead of a top 5. Looking forward to reading other people’s choices.

I loved all these shows. For some reason, I stopped watching Dawson’s Creek at around season 3 and I keep meaning to catch up with it.
Haha I totally used to watch all of these as well – used to love Byker Grove.

These were very much part of my childhood but I was quite young when they were on. Loved gladiators though x

I remember watching Basil Brush on Saturday night and then Baywatch! Gladiators was cool too!

I loved Fresh Prince of Belle Air as a child! Classic tv viewing – they should have reruns on now!
Some TV classics here isn’t it amazing how viewing tastes changed throughout the years? Huge emphasis on reality TV now!
I loved reading this post. I remember all of these! I liked Wolf in the Gladiators as he always started fights. I feel really old now.
I loved Gladiators and Byker Grove! I also loved the Power Rangers, the Queens Nose and The Demon Headmaster!
