Is Having A Well A Good Idea For Your Home?

As time goes on, people are looking to have more control over their lives and how they manage their homes. Sustainability is at the forefront of many homeowners minds these days.

Some people are taking this to the extreme and going off grid by using alternative energy to live as sustainably as possible.

While you may not want to go that deeply into it, you can do things like take your water resources into your own hands by getting a well.

Is having a well always the best bet? Well, not always, but in many cases it beats having city water. In this article, I will go over several of the things to keep in mind if you are thinking about a well.

You’re in control

Water bans are becoming common in many areas where your water usage gets limited to certain hours of the day and only for certain applications when you are on city water.

With a well, you can use the water anytime you like for whatever purpose you like. You can be out watering your lawn keeping it nice and green while your neighbours are dealing with dead, brown grass. If you want a water feature in your garden like wall hanging fountains, then nobody can tell you that you can’t.

You are in more control when your water is your own and not from the city.

There is maintenance

City water is far more convenient than well water. With well water you do need to be doing testing every year to make sure the water is safe to drink. Some people may need to have a water purifier if there are bacteria or other contaminants. This isn’t a problem for most people, but you do need to be aware that it is a possibility.

At some point you will need to upgrade things like the well casing or cover and the pump since a well pump lifespan is about eight to ten years.

It isn’t a lot of work to do this, but it can end up getting expensive.

No water bill

Any maintenance costs will be offset by the fact that you won’t have any water bills to deal with.

Your water can run 24 hours per day and it won’t cost you a cent in water bills from the city. If you have a pump, however, you will have an electricity bill when it runs. Though most well owners have a tank that the pump fills up so it isn’t running all the time. Just when the tank needs to be topped up it will come on for a few minutes.

Adds value to your home

When it comes time to sell your home, a great selling point that you should focus on is the well. A new owner will likely be very happy to have access to fresh, clean water and no water bills. Plus, the installation is already done for them so they will be more than happy to buy a house with a well already in use.
