Hi, my name is Rachel and I’m a 30 something mum of two, aged 4 (almost 5!) and 2 and a half. I’m also a primary school teacher and since having kids, I work part time, 2 days a week.
I found that being “mummy” meant I forgot who Rachel was – getting back into writing and doing something that made me use my pre-baby brain gave me a bit of myself back again! So Kids, Cuddles and Muddy Puddles was born, and I started blogging early this year!
My blog is a parenting, lifestyle and language learning blog, named after my (and my children’s) favourite things! I am documenting our language learning journey as I teach my children German at home! You’ll also find that I end each post with a message about how I find joy in the little things every day, even if things didn’t go to plan!
Q1. How would your best friend describe you? (not sure then ask them)Oh, goodness! I am the queen of avoiding self-love and compliments so I had to ask my friends! Here are their answers…
“Kind, hugely caring, loyal and so supportive! Always there for us when we need her and amazing company! One of the most thoughtful people I know.”
“A heart of gold. So caring and passionate for life.”
That made me a bit emosh! What lovely friends I have! 🙂
Q2. What is your favourite thing about blogging?
I think it’s about having a creative outlet for me. I didn’t start my blog to make money, I haven’t got a clue where to start anyway! I am just enjoying writing about things I do with my family, and if I give other parents out there ideas, tips and encouragement on all things parenting, then that’s great! I didn’t realise there was actually so much to learn about blogging, and I’ve already learnt such a lot in a very short space of time.
Q3. If you could change anything about blogging, what would it be?
Well, I haven’t been doing it very long but I suppose I’d say I’d limit the amount of “free” time I’ve now realised it takes up! (My hubby will tell you, the housework has suffered a bit! Haha!) In the beginning, I didn’t realise just how much time goes into creating images and Pinterest pins, SEO research, etc. But I am getting quicker at it as time goes by!
Q4. If you were invited to a Blogger’s Cocktail Party, which three bloggers would you invite and why?
Now, that’s a tough one as I’m only really getting to grips with who’s who in the blogging world! So I’ll say Kate from Confessions of a New Mummy so we could chat about our Dachshund puppies; Aleena from Mummy Mama Mum because she’s an awesome VA and has helped me a lot directly and indirectly with all things blog related, and Lucy from Mrs. H’s Favourite things because I love reading her #OurWeekendHappy posts every week.
Q5. What is the best blogging tip you have been given?
Don’t compare yourself to others and don’t get obsessed with figures! Just write great content that people want to read and the rest will follow… Oh, and be yourself. Don’t feel pressured to copy the style of others, just be you and go with the flow!
Q6. When you aren’t blogging, where is your favourite place to visit for a day out?
Anywhere in the Peak District! We are so lucky to live with such beauty on our doorstep and it’s so easy to take it for granted. Personally, we love The Roaches, Tittesworth Reservoir and Rudyard Lake – all of which you can read about over on my blog.
Q7. Tell us about your guilty pleasure. It could be food, drink, a TV programme or your favourite band.
This is a bit embarrasing…! CBeebies own Dr. Ranj is my guilty pleasure! Haha! He’s so charming and let’s face it, quite easy on the eye! And his show Get Well Soon is adored by both my kids. His Instagram makes me chuckle too, he’s very open and honest and posts some fab pictures! Other than that, I’d say cake…any type and plenty of it! Washed down with a nice latte if we’re out and about! (This is one of the many reasons I need to rejoin my local slimming club!)
Q8. If you knew you were going to be marooned on a desert island and could take 3 luxury items with you, what would they be?
Well, one would definitely be lip balm! I have suffered with dry lips since I took a strong medication for cystic acne back in my teens (I’ve blogged about this too), and I can’t go even a few hours without applying it! The second would be a pillow…I can’t sleep flat and I don’t think palm leaves and mounds of sand would cut it! The third would be a photo of my children (assuming I couldn’t take them with me!) or better still, a iPad with super-duper desert island reaching WiFi so I could keep in touch via FaceTime!
Q9. What was the last good book you read?
I can’t remember. It’s been so long since I was able to immerse myself in a good novel! I did read a whole book on a child-free holiday in Croatia last August. It was non-fiction, called, “Talking with Psychopaths and Savages” by criminologist Christopher Berry-Dee. It was fascinating although quite chilling!
Q10. Describe your perfect date night?
Anywhere I can relax without the children! I think having the right babysitters helps you to enjoy yourself, as you know they are in safe hands and you don’t need to give them a second thought! I do love to go out for a nice meal though, just me and the Hubby. We’ve recently discovered Thai food (I know, bit late to that party!) so we’re going to a local Thai restaurant then on to an 80s dance night for my birthday next weekend! The kids are having a sleepover at their grandparents so I don’t even have to worry about coming in late or getting up early! Now that’s perfect!
