#Blogtober17 Day 5 – Education

Education! Many of you have stated that you were struggling with this one, so to those people I am sorry xx

I was going to just write about my own education, but it isn’t very interesting. I got 9 gcse’s 2 As, 3 Bs and 4 Cs, I then went on to do a BTEC in Nursery Nursing, I started my nursing degree, but 18 months into it, my darling daughter arrived, so that changed my education path slightly. When Lochlan was 2 I started a BA (Hons) in Childhood and Youth Studies, after the first year I found out I was expecting Neva, I was finally awarded my degree in 2008, so I started my degree with 2 children and finished it with 5, I couldn’t attend my graduation as it was the week after Eowyn was born!

As always, the children are far more interesting, they have been back at school for one month, so i’m going to tell you a little bit about how they are getting on (there’s quite a few of them!!)

Firstly, Viggo started his new preschool, he is going Monday-Thursday 9.30-3.30 and he absolutely loves it! We mad the decision to move him as his previous pre-school have changed the hours and the fees to accommodate the 30 free hours of education, half of the staff members have left in the last 6 months and it didn’t have the lovely community feel anymore, I was very sad to make the decision as all of the other 6 had ย gone from there to school, but I do think it was the best decision, as he is thriving at his new one.

Tyrus has just gone into Year 2, he now has an EHCP in place, and the teaching assistant he had in reception (who he absolutely adores) is now in year 2 with him, although it has only been a few weeks, already I can see the progress he has made, and I couldn’t be happier. I picked him up yesterday and he had been working So hard that he had been put on the silver cloud, which he was very pleased about. He has settled really well, although he doesn’t like to hang his coat and bag on his peg and takes them into the classroom with him most mornings, he is happy for me to go and it is a far cry from the screams I used to have last year.

Eowyn has moved into year 4, and has such enthusiasm, which I can only assume is because she likes her new teacher. She spent half the weekend making a powerpoint presentation about the Greeks, I thought it was part of her homework, but actually it was on top of it as she was so engrossed in the topic. She does her times tables and her spellings without fuss, which was unheard of last year. They learn to play a brass instrument as part of their music lesson, it began when Lochlan was in year 4, so I am now onto my fourth child learning to play. Eowyn has chosen a cornet and I was serenaded whilst in the bast last week!

Kaide started the same high school as Neva, and he is loving it, although he is the only child that went fro his primary school, it didn’t bother him and he has already made lots of new friends, he is getting to grips with his timetable, although he still has a copy in his pocket to remind him. He just did his first maths assessment, and with the new grading system of 1-9 (1 being bad) he got an 8+ so he was super pleased. He still chats to his old school buddies on the ps4 most nights, and eventually they will probably all end up back together when they get to college.

Neva is now in year 10, and she is doing great, she is getting top grades in all subjects, even the ones she isn’t too keen on, her form tutor even suggested she stand for head girl next year, but she’s not sure yet. The way they organise their school, means that for PL time (what I would call form period) they have a mix of all year groups, and they put siblings together, so Kaides first day at high school was spent with Neva, she is a very caring individual and takes good care of him. She has just organised her work experience for next June in the local kennels as she is a real animal lover, and she is super excited about our new arrival due 10th November (don’t panic its a puppy not another baby!)

Lochlan is now into his second year of college, he passed all of his first year courses so he is still studying for a double award in Film & TV and Games Development. He has also taken on a role of student ambassador, in fact, today the college is shut for lessons due to an open days for prospective students and their parents for next year, but Lochlan has volunteered to be there all day to show them round and answer any questions they have. He spends most of his free time on his phone, ps4 or pc, much like any other 17 year old, but he is also great helping to take care of the younger children, but not great at housework!!

And finally Xene, she has now been at university in Hartlepool for three weeks, studing production design for stage and screen and she is loving it. We all miss her like crazy, but I know it will probably happen to all of them one day. She has a great group of people she shares a flat with and she has learnt to cook and budget. She is loving her course, when I last spoke to her they were learning how to make pies out of plaster! We facetime and she speaks to her siblings on the ps4, she has no half terms, but is planning to come back for a weekend at the end of October, which I can’t wait for.

So, thats all my seven and their education this year so far.

It sounds like your children have all settled in well to their new school year and new schools in some cases. I actually found this topic easy, think I went on a bit of a tangent haha, I took a different view on it and wrote about the effects of chronic illness and education x

I dread when J goes to school. I’ll be a jibbering wreck. I’m bad enough finding him a preschool I like since our previous one closed down. We’re doing a sort of ‘home school’ for now so I know he’s still doing fun preschool activities.

As a teacher I spend my life in school but it must be so interesting to have them all at different stages. I’m looking at what my daughter is doing in P1 and understanding how important it is even seeing what we’re doing in S1! P being primary and S being secondary – we’re in Scotland!

Blimey – it must be so hard to keep track of what they’re all doing at school and make sure all homework etc is done. It sounds like they’re all doing great though ๐Ÿ™‚ #Blogtober

That’s a lot of homework to check up on! ๐Ÿ˜€ My son is only just turned 2, so school is a while off yet. I had been going to nursery twice a week since he was 8.5 months though, and he really is thriving!
